Rocket Farms, headquartered in Salinas, Calif., has earned VeriFlora certification for agricultural sustainability. The company operates over 5.5 million sq. ft. of greenhouse space producing poinsettias, orchids, calla lilies, specialty crops and organic herbs and vegetables. It has 9 production facilities throughout California. To receive VeriFlora certification growers must meet high standards in environmental sustainability, including sustainable crop production, water conservation, energy efficiency, ecosystem protection and integrated waste management. The certification also addresses social sustainability, ensuring fair labor practices and a safe, equitable and healthy work environment. As a part of its Code of Sustainability, Rocket Farms is looking for creative ways to reuse leftover materials such as rebuilding greenhouses and constructing rolling benches. The company is in the process of retrofitting all of its greenhouse space with bottom heat, which should conserve an estimated 10-20% of energy per year.
