Saturday, collaborating local nurseries from around the area will open their doors to the public for the second annual Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open House, a family-friendly day of greenhouse tours, activities and workshops, with an emphasis on sustainable practices and local produce.

The farms, which include California Floral Greens cut greens, California Pajarosa cut flowers, Jacobs Farm herbs and flowers, Kitiyama Brothers cut flowers, Rocket Farms potted plants and herbs, Star Farms cut flowers and Succulent Gardens succulent plants, hope to stress the importance of water conservation while sharing new growing techniques.

Fresh produce also will be available for purchase, with proceeds from these sales going to local nonprofits. A weekly grower's showcase will be available on their website and Facebook pages leading up to the event.

"We are looking forward to showcasing our farm and the steps we are taking to make our farm more sustainable," said Kirk DiCicco, general manager of Continental Floral Greens of Watsonville, referring specifically to the farm's use of graywater from Watsonville's wastewater treatment plant.

"People have no idea where their flowers come from, and the more we can educate our neighbors and those around us, the more change we can expect," DiCicco said.

The event, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is free for anyone who wants to attend and learn more about local farms.
